Cat Scratch Disease

Also known as cat scratch fever or benign lymphoproliferative disease, this is another zoonotic illness. It is caused by the bacterium Bartonella henselae. The disease can occur yearround, with a peak in autumn and winter. The bacteria are primarily found in a cat's saliva and salivary glands, and healthy cats can become infected through fleas. Humans can contract the infection through scratches or bites from infected cats.

Approximately 30% to 40% of pet cats are infected with the disease, but most do not show any symptoms. Ninety percent of patients have a history of being scratched or bitten by a cat or another animal, such as kissing a cat, sleeping with a cat, or allowing a cat to lick them.

To prevent cat scratch disease, individuals with weakened immune systems should avoid keeping pets at home. Refrain from overintimacy with cats and maintain a safe distance from stray cats and dogs. Avoid provoking cats in heat, and regularly deworm and vaccinate against rabies. Regularly trim a cat's claws, removing the tip by 1 to 2 millimeters.
