Section 1: Symptoms of Guinea Pig Stomatitis

One common symptom of guinea pig stomatitis is a hoarse voice. While not all guinea pigs with stomatitis will exhibit this sign, if you notice your guinea pig's voice has become raspy, it's wise to consider whether it might be an early sign of stomatitis. A hoarse voice could also be due to excessive barking or dehydration, but if you observe excessive drooling, with smelly saliva, or if the whiskers around the chin are wet and appear green or yellow, your guinea pig may be suffering from stomatitis.

Stomatitis in guinea pigs can result from improper feeding or from the mouth being pierced by a sharp object. If your guinea pig has stomatitis, you may also notice symptoms such as inflamed mucous membranes, constant drooling, mouth ulcers, and difficulty or refusal to eat.

Section 2: Treatment Methods for Guinea Pig Stomatitis

1. Use iodine glycerin for mild cases. This treatment is suitable when the guinea pig can still eat, and the saliva is odorless or not discolored. Gently apply a small amount of iodine glycerin with a cotton swab into the guinea pig's mouth, ensuring not to let the animal ingest the medication. Administer this treatment 23 times a day.

Alternatively, you can first give the guinea pig an electrolyte solution and then use iodine glycerin to rinse its mouth. Afterward, apply stomatitis medication.

For more severe cases, combine the treatment with stomatitis solution, using it once a day for three consecutive days.

2. Supplement your guinea pig with Vitamin B2 by mixing one tablet with 125ml of water for oral administration.

Section 3: Prevention of Guinea Pig Stomatitis

1. Use a ball water bottle to provide water to your guinea pig; avoid feeding young guinea pigs under three months with coarse, spiky hay, or chop the hay before feeding. Also, prevent young guinea pigs from consuming too much fresh, juicy vegetables or fruits.

2. Feed your guinea pig scientifically and ensure it has enough opportunities to grind its teeth.
