During the first three weeks of a kitten's life, their sole source of nutrition is the milk provided by their mother. The mother cat spends most of her time in the nesting area, but as the kittens grow, she spends less time there.

By the time the kittens are three weeks old, their eyes and ears have developed sufficiently, and they require a substantial amount of milk. The mother cat must ensure her kittens receive enough nourishment during this period.

Around the time the kittens are about a month old, they are still exclusively fed on liquid milk. Typically, at this stage, the mother cat may start to show signs of reluctance to nurse. If she lies down with her teats facing the ground or climbs onto a higher object, it's a sign she's refusing to feed. This is when it's time to consider weaning the kittens.

The process of weaning kittens should be gradual. Generally, kittens are ready to be weaned around 1.5 to 2 months of age, or when they weigh between 700 to 750 grams, which is usually around 7 to 8 weeks after birth. Weaning at this point is beneficial for both the kittens and the mother cat.

The primary basis for weaning is the kittens' healthy development and their ability to live independently. Weaning too early or too late can be detrimental. Early weaning can affect the kittens' physical development, while late weaning can lead to a milk addiction, potential pica (eating nonfood items), and can also be harmful to the mother cat's health.

To help wean the kittens, consider the following methods:

1. Isolation: Keep the mother and kittens separate to prevent the kittens from seeking milk from their mother.

2. Apply Unwanted Odors: Gently apply a taste that the kittens dislike to the mother's nipples, ensuring it is harmless to their health.

3. Introduce Solid Foods: Place the kittens' food on their lips to encourage them to taste and get accustomed to the new flavors.

After weaning, you can offer the kittens goat's milk powder and gradually transition them to softened kitten food soaked in warm water. Since kittens have delicate digestive systems, it's important for the caregiver to feed them in small, frequent meals.

By following these steps, you can ensure a smooth and healthy transition for your kittens as they grow into independent little cats.
