Is Cat Vomiting a Sign of Illness? Understanding Causes
One, Common Causes of Cat Vomiting
1. Excessive grooming leading to hairball ingestion;
2. Eating too quickly or in large quantities at once;
3. Sudden dietary changes that the cat has not yet adapted to;
4. Presence of intestinal parasites;
5. Indigestion or the presence of toxic foreign objects within the body;
6. Inflammation, kidney or liver diseases, central nervous system disorders, and more.
Two, Solutions for Cat Vomiting
When a cat vomits, first observe the cat's condition. If there are no other apparent abnormalities after the vomiting has ceased, pet owners can take a sigh of relief. Most cases are caused by the first three reasons mentioned. Simply ensure the cat stays hydrated, rest quietly, and it should recover gradually.
If the cat shows signs of listlessness, decreased appetite, lack of interest in movement, or other symptoms after vomiting, it may indicate the latter three causes. It is advisable for the owner to take the cat to a veterinarian immediately for medical attention and treatment. After examining the cat, the vet may opt for blood tests, Xrays, or fecal examinations to help diagnose the cat's condition. Owners can assist by observing and documenting the vomiting episodes, taking photos of the vomit to aid the doctor in making a more accurate assessment.
Three, Observations and Record Keeping
1. Whether the cat ingested any foreign objects prior to vomiting;
2. The time the vomiting began and the frequency of the episodes;
3. The contents of the vomit, such as hairballs, foreign objects, kibble, presence of blood, and odor;
4. Signs of diarrhea, dehydration, loss of appetite, and lethargy in the cat;
While it's normal for cats to regurgitate hairballs, frequent vomiting due to this can still impact their digestive system. It's recommended that pet owners regularly groom their cats, increase fiber intake, and feed a deworming paste (for prevention, once every one to two weeks is sufficient) and encourage more drinking to help the cat expel hair from its stomach, thereby reducing instances of vomiting.
