Part 1: Postpartum Bleeding in Cats

The duration of vaginal bleeding in a mother cat can be unpredictable. Some cats may not show any bleeding for the first one or two days, while others might not bleed for a week. Therefore, it is crucial for the owner to closely monitor the cat's health for a week after giving birth. If the mother cat continues to bleed excessively, accompanied by symptoms such as chills, pale membranes, lethargy, and rapid breathing, it is essential to seek veterinary care immediately. This condition can be severe, potentially leading to shock and even threatening the cat's life.

Part 2: Causes of Postpartum Bleeding in Cats

Postpartum bleeding is a normal occurrence, often accompanied by thick, milky fluid. This fluid helps to expel the afterbirth, which includes dead tissue and mucous from the uterus. However, abnormal heavy bleeding may be due to uterine rupture or clotting disorders. As a result, proper postpartum care for the mother cat is necessary.

Part 3: Caring for the Mother Cat Postpartum

Avoid disturbing or teasing the mother and her kittens. The mother can become more irritable during this time, and she might attack or abandon her kittens if they are disturbed.

Ensure the mother cat receives adequate nutrition to support her milk supply. Feeding her highprotein foods like chicken breast or goat's milk, along with plenty of clean water, is recommended.

Regularly disinfect the nesting area and change the bedding. Trim the kittens' claws to prevent them from scratching the mother. Clean and disinfect the mother's nipples, and allow her to engage in light exercise during the first few days postpartum.
