Signs of Hamster Estrus: What to Look Out For

1. Generally, hamsters reach reproductive maturity around one and a half months after birth, with females typically developing their ability to reproduce a little later, about half a month after the males. However, some hamsters may mature earlier, which could lead to unintended pregnancies if kept in a mixedsex cage. Once a male and female hamster of breeding age are housed together, it won't be long before you see a litter of adorable hamster pups. She might also resist the male's frequent mounting attempts. An aroused male is highly energetic, so it's best not to handle him lightly to avoid a bite. If you observe mating or the male chasing the female, it's a strong indication that the female is on her way to pregnancy. During pregnancy, the female needs extra care, so keeping the male separated is crucial to ensure her safety and the wellbeing of the upcoming litter.

During estrus, the cage may have a stronger smell, but typically, there's no need for an extensive cleaning.
