Optimal Position for Administering Pet Oral Medication
1. The Art of Camouflage
One common tactic is to blend medication with a pet's favorite treats to mask the taste of the medicine. This method can be quite effective, but some pets are surprisingly astute and may not be easily deceived.
2. The Forceful Technique
When it comes to administering medication to a dog, you can use a technique that takes advantage of their anatomy. Place your left hand under the pet's jaw, with your thumb and middle finger gently holding the lips. Aim for the indentation in the front incisors. If the pet resists and tries to bite, it's likely to nip at its own lips first. With a firm but gentle grip, pull the mouth open. Use your right hand to hold the medication and place it at the back of the tongue. Close the pet's mouth, prompting them to swallow. Afterward, offer them some water to help with the swallowing process.
3. The Injection Method
This method is quite similar to the forceful technique. Once the pet's mouth is opened, use a syringe to quickly inject the medication into the mouth. This method is particularly useful for pets that are particularly resistant to swallowing pills or for those who require a precise dose.
