Symptoms of Canine Distemper in Tibetan Mastiffs

When a Tibetan Mastiff contracts canine distemper, it is highly recommended to seek veterinary care immediately. Canine distemper is a deadly disease for dogs, and many owners of Tibetan Mastiffs are anxious about their pets falling ill due to its high mortality rate. Currently, the treatment for canine distemper in China primarily involves hospitalization, where dogs are administered injections, sera, and intravenous fluids. If the dog has a strong immune system, it can recover with proper treatment. However, the prognosis becomes uncertain for those with weaker immunity.

The symptoms of canine distemper can be categorized into early, middle, and late stages. In the early stage, the dog's body temperature typically remains above 40°C and rapidly returns to normal within two days. If the owner notices these signs and takes the dog to a vet promptly, the chances of recovery are quite high. As the disease progresses to the middle stage, the dog's temperature may again rise above 40°C, and antipyretics will not be effective. The dog may continue to experience fever, dry cough, and increased respiratory rate. By the late stage, the chances of recovery diminish significantly. Most dogs with latestage canine distemper find it extremely difficult to recover, with a mortality rate exceeding 95%.

Therefore, it is crucial for pet owners to pay close attention to their Tibetan Mastiffs' behavior on a daily basis. Signs to watch out for include loss of appetite, fever, lack of energy, decreased activity, and diarrhea or vomiting. If any of these symptoms are observed, it is essential to thoroughly examine the dog to determine the cause of the illness. Early treatment can lead to a swift recovery. Many viral diseases become challenging to treat in the late stages, and even if they are cured, the dog may struggle to regain its former vitality and spirit.
