After birth, puppies are devoid of hearing and vision for the first 10 days, relying solely on their sense of smell. Newborn puppies have their eyes tightly shut, and it takes about 10 days for them to open their eyes. By the 21st day, they are capable of moving around freely.
For the healthy development of newborn puppies, aside from mother's milk, a quiet and warm living environment is essential.
During the first 1 to 14 days after birth, the ideal temperature for puppies should be between 25 to 29 degrees Celsius. From the 14th to the 21st day, the temperature should be adjusted to 23 to 26 degrees Celsius. Therefore, during cold weather, it's important to ensure the puppies are wellprotected from the chill. You can use electric heating pads, hot water bottles, and infrared bulbs as auxiliary tools. However, in the hot summer months, puppies are susceptible to overheating, which can lead to heatstroke or even death. So, during summer, it's crucial to keep the puppies in a cool, wellventilated, and dry area.
When the puppies get dirty, it's important to wipe them clean with a towel. As they grow older, you should bathe them every few days, maintaining a water temperature of 35 to 38 degrees Celsius. After washing, make sure to dry them thoroughly, using a hairdryer if necessary. Postbath, you can comb their fur and trim their nails, which helps to promote their blood circulation.
Great care must be taken to maintain a clean environment during the weaning process. Regular deworming and vaccination are also of utmost importance. Typically, puppies should be dewormed for the first time between 20 to 25 days old, with the second deworming at 40 to 45 days. Vaccinations should begin at around 2 months old, with subsequent doses given every two weeks, aiming for a total of 2 to 3 vaccinations.
