Why Guinea Pigs Are Not Suitable for Housing with Chinchillas

1. Contrasting Temperaments

Guinea pigs thrive in a quiet environment, spending most of their days in slumber, with their activity levels peaking only at night. In contrast, chinchillas are quite the opposite, being highly active, especially during the evening, with a penchant for jumping around. Keeping these two together can lead to one of them accidentally stepping on the other, as guinea pigs are fragile and can easily fracture or sustain injuries from such encounters.

2. Different Enclosure Requirements

Guinea pigs require enclosures that are not too tall, with a height of 30cm being sufficient. If the enclosure is taller than 40cm, a top mesh is not necessary, as the top can be left open. However, guinea pigs enjoy lying down and thus necessitate a spacious enclosure to prevent it from being too cramped. Chinchillas, on the other hand, demand enclosures that are at least 60cm tall and prefer them to be even higher to accommodate their jumping habits, which are less of a concern for guinea pigs.

3. Varied Dietary Preferences

Guinea pigs are easy to feed, being nonpicky eaters with minimal requirements for the quality of their food. They will consume almost anything as long as it's not spoiled, making them a joy to feed. Chinchillas, however, are quite particular about their diet, demanding highquality food and often rejecting what they don't find palatable.

4. Differences in Appetite and Waste

Despite their seemingly large size, chinchillas are actually quite small, with much of their bulk coming from their thick and long fur. After shedding, they can appear significantly smaller. Chinchillas have a relatively small appetite and can waste more than they consume. In comparison, guinea pigs, being voracious eaters, consume more and, consequently, have more frequent bathroom visits.

5. Different Nutritional Needs

Guinea pigs require their diet to be supplemented with vitamin C, as their bodies cannot synthesize it and must obtain it from their food. A deficiency in vitamin C can lead to serious health issues. Chinchillas, however, do not typically require additional vitamin C in their diet, and an excess can actually shorten the shelf life of their food. There are other nutritional differences between the two species as well.
