One: The Timing of Rabbit Molting

Generally, rabbits undergo a significant molting transformation during the spring and autumn seasons. However, the aftermath of molting varies between these two times. After molting in spring, rabbits tend to have less fur and a lighter coat color. Conversely, in autumn, their fur becomes thicker and the color darker. Here's a summary of rabbit molting in different situations:

1. Seasonal Molting: Rabbits typically shed their fur every three months or so, but this is most pronounced in spring and autumn. Seasonal molting usually lasts for about two weeks.

2. AgeRelated Molting: Apart from seasonal molting, rabbits experience two agerelated molts in their lifetime. The first occurs around 30 to 100 days after birth, and the second when they are 4 to 6 months old.

3. Irregular Molting: This type of molting is not as noticeable and can be likened to humans shedding a few strands of hair each day. The amount of fur loss in rabbits depends largely on the physiological state of their hair follicles and their overall health and nutrition. This is often more apparent in young and elderly rabbits.

4. Pathological Hair Loss: Rabbits may also shed hair due to certain diseases, such as malnutrition, which can lead to localized or generalized alopecia. However, hair loss caused by illness usually does not result in new hair growth, or the growth is very slow, often presenting as patchy baldness. Pet owners can distinguish this from normal molting by paying close attention to their rabbits.

Two: Characteristics of Rabbit Molting

The timing of molting can vary by region and is greatly influenced by temperature. Pet rabbits kept indoors may not experience significant temperature changes due to air conditioning in summer and heating in winter, which could lead to prolonged hair loss. If rabbits are infected with bacteria and develop inflammation, they may experience continuous hair loss. When pet owners notice their rabbits shedding, it's important to consider whether they are overprotecting them and to correctly identify the cause of the hair loss. If the rabbit is affected by the constant temperature in the home, it may be necessary to improve the environment. The most comfortable temperature for rabbits is typically between 10 to 24 degrees Celsius; above this, they need protection from the heat, and below this, they require warmth.

Tip from Oxygen Pet Doctor:

During molting, rabbits expel a considerable amount of energy. Therefore, pet owners should pay close attention to their rabbits' energy and mood during this period. Adjust their diet to provide additional nutrition, helping the rabbits navigate through the molting phase smoothly.
