Effective Feline Ringworm Treatment & Care Tips

There are two types of fungi that can infect cats: Microsporum canis and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. In 98% of cases, Microsporum canis is responsible for causing infections, leading to itchy, dry, circular patches known as "ringworm." This condition commonly affects the face, behind the ears, limbs, and tail, presenting as circular or elliptical lesions covered with gray scales. The fur in these areas becomes rough, with tufts of hair breaking off or falling out.

Accurate diagnosis is crucial: the presence of yellowgreen fluorescence at the hair roots under ultraviolet light is a strong indicator of feline ringworm.

Consistent medication is key: Begin by cleaning the area, removing dandruff, and trimming the fur. Apply the medication to an area slightly larger than the infected region to prevent the spread and to suppress any potential spread to surrounding areas.

Boost nutrition: Increasing the intake of nutrients, particularly B vitamins, can help prevent the disease and aid in the recovery of cats already infected.

Exposure to sunlight: Ultraviolet rays can kill fungi, so allowing your cat to bask in the sun for a short period each day can be beneficial.

Disinfect the environment: Use a 1:10 solution of bleach or chlorhexidine to clean all grooming tools, bedding, and carpets. Steam cleaning and disinfecting carpets is also recommended.

For small areas of ringworm, apply clotrimazole ointment or use hydrogen peroxide to disinfect the affected area. For larger areas, oral medication such as Griseofulvin tablets, containing the active ingredient terbinafine hydrochloride, can be given to the cat. These tablets can be wrapped in a treat or placed in a can and fed to the cat once daily.

Reduce the frequency of bathing for the infected cat. Overbathing can damage the skin's protective layer, weaken the immune system, and increase the risk of ringworm spreading.
