What is "Black Chin"?

Attentionate cat owners may notice that their feline companions have started to resist being touched under the chin, seemingly out of nowhere. Moreover, there are some small, dark spots on their chins that resemble soot, which are known as "black chin" spots.

What exactly is this "black chin"?

The "black chin" in cats is actually folliculitis, akin to human acne, or what is commonly referred to as "zits," which is a type of skin condition. Cats are particularly prone to this condition on their chins and tails. In more severe cases, cats may exhibit redness, swelling, and hair loss, and they may feel pain when being cleaned, which is why they may not want their owners to touch their chins.

What Causes "Black Chin"?

1. Excessive Fat in Diet

Because cat owners love their pets so much, they often spoil them with rich food and treats. This often leads to cats consuming too much fat, either from their diet or from the highfat content in commercial cat food. Over time, a highfat diet can be a significant contributor to the development of black chin.

When selecting cat food, it's important to pay attention to the nutritional information on the packaging.

2. Estrus in Cats

Cats in estrus experience a different hormonal balance than usual, which can lead to endocrine disorders. The hormonal changes, particularly an increase in androgens, can trigger folliculitis.

3. Inadequate Daily Cleaning

While cats can clean themselves thoroughly, there are still areas they can't reach, including their chins. Cats often leave food residue and dirt under their chins after eating and drinking, which, if not cleaned promptly, can lead to black chin.

4. Cat's Body Type

Certain body types in cats are more prone to black chin due to excessive oil secretion from sebaceous glands, which can clog hair follicles. This is similar to how people with dry or oily skin types can be prone to acne.

Treatment for Black Chin

1. If the black chin symptoms are mild, with only a few small spots, you can clean the area with a cloth or cotton ball soaked in saltwater. Alternatively, using green tea water can be gentle on the cat's skin. For severe cases, after cleaning, you can apply an antiinflammatory ointment like erythromycin. If the cat's tail has folliculitis, you can dilute a little sulfur soap in water for cleaning, but be careful not to make it too concentrated.

It's important to check for any traumatic wounds on the cat's tail before using this method, as it may not be suitable if there are wounds present.
