How to Acquire Your Dream Pet

For city dwellers, there are generally two main ways to acquire a pet: purchasing or adopting.

Purchasing can be done either in person or online. However, based on veterinary consultations, it is not recommended to buy pets online, as there is a higher chance of encountering issues.

Adoption includes taking in stray dogs or adopting through rescue organizations. These organizations often post adoption notices on local forums and Weibo.

(Note: It is advised against adopting through rescue organizations due to their stringent requirements, unclear origins, and potentially high fees.)

Criteria for Purchasing or Adopting a Pet

Everyone has different preferences when it comes to pets, so the standards vary. Factors like fur, breed, and temperament should align with personal preference. However, there are two important considerations: age and vaccination proof.

When purchasing a pet, ensure the seller provides vaccination and age proof. Generally, cats over four months and dogs over three months are considered suitable for sale.

The First Thing to Do Upon Receiving Your Pet

Many people are so excited to bring their new pet home that they overlook their health and condition. By the time they notice a problem, it may be too late to treat the illness or return the pet.

Doctors recommend that, upon bringing a pet home, you should immediately:

Check the senses: Illnesses in cats and dogs often manifest in their senses. Common issues include excessive ear discharge (due to mites or fungal infections), pale gums (indicating malnutrition), and eye discharge (indicating viral infections or bacterial infections). Additionally, inspect the coat and skeleton for signs of hair loss, swelling, scabs, or abnormal gait or skeletal deformities.

Assess the mood: Animals are generally more active than inactive. If your new cat or dog seems listless, has a lack of appetite, or appears to be in a poor mood, there may be underlying health risks.

Preparations for LongTerm Pet Care

Whether you purchase or adopt a pet, to ensure longterm care, it is advisable to undergo further checks, including, but not limited to, deworming, vaccinations, and veterinary visits.

These preparations are often done simultaneously. Our doctors recommend comprehensive checks for both the pet and the owner to ensure health and safety.

For city residents, there are many other challenges associated with pet ownership—such as pet registration, negotiating with landlords, preparing a pet bed, and sourcing pet food.
