Dog bronchopneumonia, also known as catarrhal pneumonia or lobular pneumonia, is a condition characterized by high fever, coughing with difficulty in breathing, and the discharge of yellowishbrown thick nasal mucus. In traditional Chinese veterinary medicine, it is referred to as "lung heat and asthma syndrome."

This illness often occurs when dogs are attacked by external pathogenic factors such as cold and wind, allowing the pathogens to enter the body and affect the lungs. The lung Qi fails to descend and ascend properly, leading to the accumulation of phlegm and the obstruction of waterways. Consequently, the normal functioning of the body's Qi and blood is disrupted, causing the lung Qi to become unbalanced and the flow of Qi to be obstructed. Symptoms in young dogs include fever, asthma, coughing, and the discharge of purulent brown nasal mucus.

Other symptoms may include depression, loss of appetite, initial symptoms of a cold such as a runny nose, nasal congestion, headshaking, chills, shivering, and lowgrade fever. As the condition worsens, coughing becomes more severe, and yellowish, thick nasal mucus may contain blood, sticking to the sides of the nostrils. Some dogs may also experience diarrhea. During a physical examination, the initial bronchial sounds may be rough, followed by moist rales and crepitus. Breathing becomes rapid, and dogs may breathe through their mouths. At this stage, the lung sounds may weaken or disappear, and the body temperature may rise. Dogs may become extremely depressed and refuse to eat. Their mouth color may change from bright red to purple, and their pulse may shift from rapid and forceful to slow and thin.

Treatment:

A combination of traditional Chinese and Western medicine is recommended for effective treatment.

1. Western treatment principles: Inflammation reduction, cough suppression, asthma relief, and expectoration. A 100ml solution of isotonic glucose saline, 0.1g of ofloxacin, 1ml of 10% anisodamine, 1ml of维生素B1, 1ml of维生素C, 1ml of inosine, mixed and administered intramuscularly once daily for 23 days.

2. Traditional Chinese veterinary medicine treatment principles: Clear lung heat, warm the lungs and asthma, regulate lung Qi, dissolve phlegm and relieve cough, and unblock waterways for diuresis.

① Administer 1ml of Houttuynia injection intramuscularly, twice or thrice daily.

② Administer 1ml of Andrographis injection intramuscularly, twice or thrice daily.

③ Modify the Mahuang Xigan Decoction: Mahuang 2g, Xingren 2g, Shigao 4g, Zhubeimu 2g, Huangqin 3g, Tianhuafen 2g, Pipahe 2g, Ziai 2g, Suzi 2g, Jiegeng 2g, Shanyao 2g, Shaoren 3g, Sangbaipi 2g, Huangbai 3g, Cheqianzi 2g, Gancao 3g. Add 10g of honey as a guide. Boil the mixture for internal administration and take it for three doses consecutively.

3. Integrated treatment: Initially, administer a high dose of ampicillin intravenously or through acupoints (Shenzhu, Feishu), followed by intravenous or acupoint injection of Houttuynia injection, or oral administration of Zhuli Qing (also known as bamboo juice or bamboo oil, which is the sap of fresh bamboo stems obtained by burning) or modified Mahuang Xigan Decoction. In cases of severe coughing and asthma, administer ephedrine (ephedrine) at the Feishu acupoint, 1030mg per injection.
