Parasite Deworming Schedule

Generally, healthy cats and dogs can be dewormed once they reach 2 months of age and weigh more than 0.5 kilograms. It's important to note that different deworming products may have specific age and weight requirements for dogs, so it's best to follow the instructions provided.

Newly adopted pets should be allowed to acclimate to their new home for 3 to 5 days before deworming. This helps them adjust to their new environment and reduces stress during the deworming process.

Deworming Frequency

It is recommended to perform external deworming monthly. Cats and dogs that frequently go outdoors or have a habit of eating raw bones and meat should be dewormed internally once a month. For those that stay indoors and do not consume raw meat, the frequency can be adjusted to every 1 to 3 months.

Deworming Steps

Step 1: Before administering deworming medication, weigh your pet accurately to determine the correct dosage. It's crucial to avoid estimation, as underdosing may be ineffective and overdosing can harm your pet.

Step 2: Calm your pet's emotions to ensure they are in a relaxed state during the deworming process.

Step 3: Administer the medication. Deworming medications often come in the form of drops, tablets, or meaty treats, which may require different application techniques.

When using drops, gently part your pet's fur and apply the medication directly to the skin, typically at the base of the neck. This prevents your pet from scratching or licking the area, which could interfere with the drug's effectiveness. Make sure to apply the entire dose; insufficient medication can reduce the efficacy.

For tablets, beginners may find it helpful to use a syringe to feed the medication. If your pet resists, do not force them to take the pill. Instead, you can hide the pill in a treat to encourage consumption. Ensure the tablet is swallowed smoothly.

Step 4: Observe your pet for about 10 minutes after deworming to check for any allergic reactions or gastrointestinal irritation that might cause vomiting.

Step 5: Record the deworming date to avoid forgetting future treatments.

Important Notes

Always ensure that the deworming medication is a genuine product and avoid purchasing counterfeit medications. Additionally, choose the appropriate deworming product based on your pet's specific needs.

There is no need to withhold food or water from your pet before deworming. It's advisable not to bathe your pet for three days before and after deworming, as water can dilute the medication and reduce its effectiveness.

In households with multiple pets, it's recommended to isolate the pet for about 3 hours after applying external deworming drops to prevent them from licking each other and accidentally ingesting the medication.
