The Scottish Shepherd Dog: A Brief History

The Scottish Shepherd Dog, also known as the Collie abroad, has been a subject of debate for centuries due to the mystery surrounding its exact genetic origins. Margaret Schlegel mentioned in her book that the popular Collie of 1957 emerged before the public eye, yet the composition of the breed through crossbreeding remained a mystery. Initially, Collies were chosen for their intuitive and leadership qualities, and later, they were trained in movements and methods beneficial for sheep herding.

This breed from the lowlands of Scotland owes its name to the black sheep known locally as "Colley." Like many other breeds, the Collie was a favorite of Queen Victoria. When she visited Scotland in 1860, she brought a few Collies back to Windsor Castle for breeding. This led to the Scottish Shepherd Dog gaining widespread popularity in the UK. By the late 1990s, Americans were also captivated by the breed. In 1940, the character of Lassie, a Collie, became famous through a film adaptation of the classic novel, "Lassie Come Home." For hundreds of years, the Collie was virtually unknown outside of Scotland, but it has now become one of the most beloved breeds worldwide. The Scottish Shepherd Dog is an enthusiastic guardian of cattle and sheep, known for its dedication, intelligence, and endearing nature.
