1. Assisting in Rabbit Breeding

Timing is Key: As soon as you notice a female rabbit in heat, it's important to act promptly. During the middle phase of her estrus, introduce her to the male rabbit's cage or place both in a breeding pen. After successful mating, promptly return them to their respective cages.

Encouraging Cooperation: For females that are in heat but reluctant to mate, breeders should take appropriate measures to facilitate the process. The success of breeding directly impacts the rabbitry's reproductive rate and economic benefits, so it's crucial to take this seriously.

2. Mastering the Art of Palpation

Palpating the female rabbit is the most reliable method to determine if she has become pregnant. However, many beginners are hesitant or unsure about how to perform this task. Achieving a high accuracy rate in palpation requires practice. Experienced breeders typically perform palpation checks 8 to 10 days after breeding to assess pregnancy. If pregnant, you can usually feel a hen's eggsized lump in the rabbit's abdomen.

How to Palpate a Rabbit Properly:

Gently grasp the skin around the rabbit's neck to immobilize her.

Use your other hand to gently stroke her back to calm her down.

Place your hand under her belly in a backward "V" shape and move forward to feel for the fetus. At around 8 to 10 days postbreeding, the fetus is usually concentrated in the rabbit's lower abdomen. As time progresses, the fetus will move forward to the abdominal area.

Important Notes:

The technique is not about gentle stroking but rather a light pinch. Support the rabbit's abdomen with your palm and use your fingers to gently pinch and feel for the fetus. Be cautious not to apply too much pressure, as this could cause a miscarriage or stillbirth.

Differentiate between the fetus and fecal balls. Fetal embryos are usually irregularly shaped, smooth, and elastic, while fecal balls are round, firm, and easily pinched.
