Step-by-Step Guide to Vaccinate Your Dog

For puppies, their birth is a time when they are equipped with a certain level of immunity through the placenta and their mother's milk. This period allows them to shield themselves from various pathogens with the help of these antibodies. However, due to the varying amounts and timing of colostrum intake, the puppies receive different levels of maternal antibodies, and thus, the duration of their protection varies.

Generally, after about eight weeks of age, the maternal antibodies in a puppy's body begin to wane significantly, losing their protective effect. It's at this stage that pet owners should start preparing to vaccinate their pets.

Regarding the canine distemper and canine parvovirus, around the sixth to seventh week of life, the puppies' maternal antibodies are no longer sufficient to combat these viruses. Yet, as some antibodies still remain effective, owners can initially administer the Dutch Intervet Puppy Diphtheria and Parvovirus vaccine to provide some level of immunity against these diseases.

Three to four weeks after receiving this vaccine, owners can then proceed with the hexavalent vaccine. Another three to four weeks later, the hexavalent vaccine combined with the rabies vaccine can be administered. Once all these vaccines are completed, the puppy's vaccination process is essentially finished.

In the subsequent stages of a dog's growth, owners simply need to ensure a yearly vaccination with the hexavalent and rabies vaccines. The method of vaccination may vary depending on the region, but as long as all vaccines are administered, the dog is protected.

Throughout the vaccination process, there are several precautions to take to avoid unnecessary harm to the dog. Firstly, owners must avoid changing vaccine brands arbitrarily, as it could lead to the failure of the vaccination process and necessitate starting over.

Additionally, when storing vaccines, it's crucial to adhere to their specific storage conditions to prevent them from becoming ineffective. Before vaccination, owners should also assess the dog's health to ensure they are in good condition.

For the first two weeks after vaccination, to enhance the vaccine's effectiveness, owners should refrain from bathing their dogs. Moreover, to prevent the dog from contracting other pathogens, they should minimize the dog's time outside and avoid close contact with other dogs until the vaccination series is complete.

If a dog is unable to receive vaccinations on time due to health issues, owners can initially administer hightiter serum. Once the dog recovers, they can then complete the remaining vaccine schedule.
