Section 1: How Psittacosis is Spread

Psittacosis, commonly known as parrot fever, is primarily transmitted through the secretions and excretions of infected birds. Birds can directly contract the disease from the feces and bodily fluids of an affected individual. This illness can spread among birds and between humans and birds. Humans typically become infected by inhaling air contaminated with the saliva and feces of an infected bird. However, psittacosis does not spread from person to person.

Therefore, imported parrots are a significant source of psittacosis transmission, followed by poultry farms such as chicken, duck, and pigeon farms.

Section 2: Symptoms of Psittacosis

Some birds infected with psittacosis may show no symptoms at all, while others may exhibit respiratory symptoms, gastrointestinal reactions, and liver issues. Common symptoms in birds include a lack of appetite, red and swollen eyes, excessive secretions from the eyes and nose, difficulty breathing, increased respiratory sounds, and watery diarrhea. Additional symptoms may include general weakness, fluffedup and shedding feathers, and seizures.

Section 3: Treatment Methods for Psittacosis

The primary treatment for psittacosis in birds involves injecting antibiotics into the muscle or through the crop. Unfortunately, some birds may experience recurrent symptoms even after receiving antibiotics, as the chlamydia bacteria can infect the bird's cells deeply, making it difficult for the medication to reach its target. In such cases, intravenous injections may be necessary for effective treatment.

If a significant number of birds in a coop are infected with psittacosis, the treatment involves dissolving antibiotics in water to be fed to the birds. However, this method cannot guarantee that each bird receives the required dosage daily, and the medication can degrade when exposed to sunlight. Therefore, it is crucial to keep the water and medication in a shaded area and to change them daily.

Educating about psittacosis is essential for everyone's wellbeing. If you suspect your pet bird has psittacosis, it's vital to take preventive measures. Always wear a mask when handling your bird and wash your hands frequently to minimize the risk of infection.
