Effective Treatment for Shih Tzu Fungal Infection: Expe
Causes of Fungal Skin Diseases:
Fungal skin diseases are often related to climate, age, and individual constitution. For instance, humid and hot climates tend to increase the incidence, with the southern regions, which are particularly damp, experiencing higher rates. Puppies are more susceptible than adult dogs, and those with poor nutrition are more prone to infection.
Longterm use of corticosteroid medications can also make individuals more susceptible.
Five types of molds can cause fungal skin diseases, including: Microsporum canis, Microsporum gypseum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton terrestre, and Trichophyton verrucosum. Microsporum canis is the most common.
Microsporum canis is the most prevalent cause of fungal skin diseases in dogs.
Manifestations of Fungal Skin Diseases:
Microsporum canis is widespread globally and is responsible for over 70% of canine ringworm cases. The affected skin surface forms small, round scabs, known as ringworm, which is a focal crusty skin disease that can occur on any part of a dog. It is most commonly found on the ears, face, neck, and tail.
Lesions primarily characterized by crust formation often do not involve hair loss. When the lesions are minimal, especially in longhaired dogs, they may be difficult to detect.
Microsporum canis primarily causes tinea capitis in humans.
Characteristics of the Spread of Fungal Skin Diseases:
Molds have a high vitality and resistance, and they can survive on animals, plants, or be dispersed in the air with dust, making transmission opportunities widespread.
Transmission primarily occurs through direct contact, but contact with contaminated tools can also lead to infection. It can be transmitted between humans and other animals.
Preventive Measures:
Maintain a dry environment for pet care.
Enhance nutrition by supplementing with adequate trace elements, proteins, minerals, and vitamins.
If someone has ringworm, they should avoid touching their Shih Tzu.
Regular grooming can help prevent fungal growth that may not be visible.
Treatment Measures:
Some mild cases of fungal skin diseases can heal on their own.
Early detection and treatment are crucial, and applying ointments to the affected area can yield quick results.
Scalps and crusts should be washed off, and the following ointments can be applied: Clotrimazole Ointment, Compound Salicylic Acid Ointment, Miconazole Ointment, or Undecylenic Acid Ointment. Other treatments like Lotion for Scabies can also be used.
Oral treatment should first consider Griseofulvin, at a dose of 2040 mg/kg, twice a day, for 48 weeks. Another oral option is Ketoconazole, at a dose of 10 mg/kg, three times a day, for 28 weeks.
