Newcomers to rabbit farming might think that catching a rabbit is as simple as grabbing its ears, but this is a misconception that can lead to serious harm. Rabbits have a high concentration of nerves in their ears, so pulling on them too hard can damage their hearing and, worse, the nerves or cartilage in the ears can affect their ability to dissipate heat, potentially leading to heatstroke and even death during hot summer months. Therefore, it's crucial for owners to learn the correct method of handling rabbits. The right approach involves using one hand to gently grasp the skin around the rabbit's neck and the other to support its rump, ensuring a safe and gentle catch.
2. Recognizing Estrous Symptoms in Rabbits
Female rabbits are generally capable of breeding at any time, but their fertility is highest during the estrous phase. With large rabbit populations, it can be a daunting task to check each rabbit for pregnancy. Familiarize yourself with the signs of estrous, as female rabbits often exhibit a decrease in appetite and restless behaviors like pawing and fidgeting. Owners should inspect rabbits showing these symptoms to determine if they are in heat. It's also important to note that females are particularly prone to estrous three days before weaning their kits and between 15 to 18 days postpartum. To accurately assess estrous, examine the vulva: a reddened and swollen vulva indicates estrous, with a pink vulva signaling the early stage, a bright red vulva the middle stage, and a purple vulva the late stage. The highest fertility rate is typically observed during the middle stage of estrous.

When administering vaccinations or treating illnesses, rabbit owners often need to give injections. However, many beginners struggle with this task, potentially delaying treatment for sick rabbits. Rest assured, injecting rabbits is not as difficult as it may seem. The most common types of injections include subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous. Subcutaneous injections are the most frequent, usually administered in the rabbit's neck where the skin is thin. Simply lift a flap of skin, insert the needle at a shallow angle, and stop when you feel a slight resistance. Be cautious not to insert the needle too deeply, as this could harm the rabbit's muscles or skin. Intramuscular injections are typically given in the rabbit's rump, where there is a concentration of muscle, but again, avoid going too deep. For intravenous injections, the ear is the preferred site, where you can locate a pulsating vein by pressing on the rabbit's ear root and inserting the needle into the vein.
