Canine Parvovirus Treatment Methods:

Upon the onset of the disease, it is crucial to immediately isolate the affected dog. Prevent the interaction between the sick dog, its owner, and healthy dogs. Regularly disinfect the doghouse and surrounding areas using a 2% sodium hydroxide solution or a 1020% bleach solution. It is particularly important to note that even after thorough disinfection, if a family has previously had a puppy infected with this virus, they should never bring another unvaccinated puppy into the home, as it can quickly spread and cause illness.

In clinical practice, the combination of symptomatic treatment with high immunity serum and monoclonal antibody therapy is the leading approach. The cure rate in adult dogs is higher than in puppies, and mixedbreed dogs have a higher cure rate than purebred dogs.

After the onset of the disease, strictly control the dog's diet. Prevent dehydration through intravenous fluids and other methods. Since the dog's gastrointestinal function is disrupted, eating can only increase the burden on the intestines. You can administer oral glucose, sodium chloride, and other oral agents. If the dog stops vomiting and diarrhea within 48 hours, you can then offer easily digestible food.

Commonly used medications include Antispasmodic, Vitamin K3, and Hemostatic agents; they can be used simultaneously or individually, typically every 4 to 6 hours. Antiemetics, such as Metoclopramide, are often used. Laxatives like Lomotil and Vidicon can be used for diarrhea. To prevent secondary infections, antibiotics such as Gentamicin, Penicillin, Ampicillin, Kanamycin, and Erythromycin can be used.

To facilitate the rapid excretion of internal organs, enemas can be administered. Enemas are generally performed using a 0.05% to 0.1% potassium permanganate solution or an oral rehydration solution, followed by the addition of an oral solution containing antibiotics or antitoxins. Retained enemas can also be done using normal saline, compound normal saline, or Ringer's lactate solution.

High immunity serum for canine parvovirus is now available on the market and can be tried. There is evidence that early use, combined with symptomatic treatment, can achieve good results. However, later applications are not as effective. Additionally, other medications such as interferon, Antivomiting and Antidiarrheal drugs, Canine Disease One Shot, and Canine Disease Con can also be tried. The amount of fluid administered for rehydration typically ranges from 50 to 80 milliliters per kilogram of body weight, starting from mild to severe cases.
