Effective Ways to Eliminate Fleas on Cats: A Comprehens
What Are Fleas on Cats?
Cat fleas are one of the most common external parasites found on felines. These bloodsucking parasites spend their entire adult life on their hosts, although the majority of their life cycle is completed outside of the host. After female fleas lay eggs on a cat, these eggs eventually fall off and can hatch into larvae within a few days. The larvae spin cocoons and can remain in this stage for up to 140 days before emerging when conditions are right. In warm and moist climates, the life cycle of fleas can be completed in as little as 24 weeks. If all stages of the flea are considered as a population, eggs make up 50%, larvae 35%, pupae 10%, and adult fleas only 5%. Therefore, effective flea control programs typically focus on controlling the larval stage rather than the relatively fewer adult fleas.
When fleas are found active in a cat's fur or when flea feces (flea dirt) are present, it indicates an infestation. Highly infested cats, especially kittens, may suffer from anemia due to blood loss, and flea infestations can also cause an increase in peripheral eosinophils.
How to Eliminate Fleas on Cats
1. There are two main types of products available over the counter: insect growth regulators and insecticides.
The most commonly used deworming medication is Advantix SpotOn. Advantix is effective against adult fleas and developing eggs, as well as controlling the growth of parasites. It can also kill adult fleas and ticks.
2. If local and oral medications are not sufficient to eliminate the flea population, a comprehensive indoor and outdoor flea control program should be implemented. The combination of insect growth regulators and adulticide drugs is most effective. Since fleas play a role in the life cycle of tapeworms, many cats with fleas may also require treatment for tapeworms.
