Understanding High Blood Sugar in Pets: Symptoms and Signs to Watch For

Pet owners are increasingly aware of the importance of monitoring their furry friends' health, and one condition that is gaining attention is high blood sugar, or hyperglycemia. Just like in humans, high blood sugar levels in pets can lead to serious health issues if left untreated. Here are some common symptoms and signs to watch for if you suspect your pet may be suffering from high blood sugar.

Increased Thirst and Urination

One of the earliest and most common symptoms of high blood sugar in pets is an increased thirst. You may notice your pet drinking more water than usual, which is often accompanied by more frequent urination. This happens because excess sugar in the bloodstream draws water from the body's tissues, leading to dehydration and an increased need for hydration. If you notice your pet drinking excessively and urinating more frequently, it's essential to consult your veterinarian.

Increased Appetite

While it may seem counterintuitive, pets with high blood sugar often have an increased appetite. Despite consuming more food, they may still lose weight. This occurs because the body is unable to properly use the glucose in the bloodstream for energy. Instead, the body starts breaking down fat and muscle, leading to weight loss despite an increased intake of food. If your pet seems hungrier than usual and is losing weight, it could be a sign of high blood sugar.
