Understanding Pet Stroke: Symptoms of Cerebral Infarction in Pets

Pet owners often consider their furry friends as part of the family, and the sudden loss of a pet can be devastating. Cerebral infarction, commonly known as a stroke, is a serious condition that can affect pets, particularly dogs and cats. Recognizing the symptoms of a stroke can be crucial in providing timely care and support for your pet. Here are some key symptoms and signs to watch for if you suspect your pet has experienced a cerebral infarction.

Loss of Coordination and Balance

One of the most common symptoms of a cerebral infarction in pets is a loss of coordination and balance. You may notice your pet staggering, falling, or having difficulty walking. This occurs because the stroke affects the brain's ability to control muscle movements. If your pet suddenly seems unsteady on their feet or has a wobbly gait, it's essential to seek veterinary attention immediately.

Weakness or Paralysis

Weakness or paralysis on one side of the body is another telltale sign of a stroke. This condition, known as hemiparesis or hemiplegia, can cause your pet to drag one leg or fall over. In severe cases, your pet may be unable to move one side of their body at all. Prompt veterinary care is crucial to assess the extent of the damage and provide appropriate treatment.

Head Tilting and Eye Deviation

A pet experiencing a cerebral infarction may exhibit head tilting or eye deviation. This occurs when the stroke affects the nerves controlling the muscles in the head and eyes. You might notice your pet's head tilted to one side or their eyes not moving together properly. This symptom can also be accompanied by nystagmus, which is rapid, involuntary eye movement.
