Understanding Follicular Mange in Pets: Symptoms and Signs

Follicular mange, also known as demodectic mange, is a skin disease caused by an overpopulation of Demodex mites in the hair follicles of dogs and cats. These mites are normally present in small numbers in the skin of healthy pets, but an overgrowth can lead to a range of uncomfortable symptoms and complications. Recognizing the symptoms of follicular mange is crucial for early detection and treatment, ensuring the health and comfort of your pet.

Symptom 1: Hair Loss

One of the most common symptoms of follicular mange is hair loss, or alopecia. This typically starts in localized areas, often around the eyes, mouth, and feet, and can progress to larger patches on the body. The hair loss may be patchy or circular, and the skin in these areas may appear red or inflamed.

Symptom 2: Scaling and Crusting

As the Demodex mites burrow into the hair follicles, they can cause irritation and inflammation, leading to scaling and crusting of the skin. The affected areas may feel rough or scaly to the touch, and the crusts can sometimes be quite thick.

Symptom 3: Itching and Discomfort

Pets with follicular mange often experience significant itching and discomfort. This can lead to excessive scratching, biting, or licking of the affected areas, which can further irritate the skin and lead to secondary infections.

Symptom 4: Lesions and Sores

In more severe cases of follicular mange, the skin can develop lesions and sores. These can be painful and may become infected, requiring prompt veterinary attention. Lesions may be red, raised, or ulcerated, and they can be quite distressing for the pet.

Symptom 5: Changes in Skin Color
