Understanding Pet Stroke: Symptoms of Cerebral Hemorrhage in Pets

Pet owners are often unaware that their furry companions can suffer from a condition similar to a human stroke, known as a cerebral hemorrhage. This condition occurs when there is bleeding in the brain, which can lead to severe neurological damage if not promptly addressed. Recognizing the symptoms of cerebral hemorrhage in pets is crucial for timely intervention and treatment. Here are some key signs to watch for.

Loss of Coordination and Balance

One of the most common symptoms of cerebral hemorrhage in pets is a loss of coordination and balance. Your pet may appear wobbly or unsteady on their feet, and they might have difficulty walking or standing up. This can be particularly evident when they try to navigate stairs or change direction quickly. If you notice your pet stumbling or falling frequently, it could be a sign of a neurological issue.

Weakness or Paralysis

Another telltale sign is weakness or paralysis on one side of the body. This condition, known as hemiparesis, can cause your pet to drag one leg or fall over when trying to walk. In severe cases, your pet may be unable to move one side of their body at all. This symptom can develop suddenly or gradually, so it's essential to monitor any changes in your pet's mobility.

Head Tilting and Eye Twitching

Cerebral hemorrhage can also cause your pet to tilt their head to one side or exhibit rapid eye movements, known as nystagmus. This occurs because the brain's control over the muscles in the head and eyes is compromised. If you notice your pet consistently holding their head at an angle or their eyes flickering back and forth, it could be a sign of a stroke.
