Distemper in dogs is a serious and highly contagious disease that can lead to severe health issues if not addressed promptly. Recognizing the symptoms early is crucial for the well-being of your furry friend. Dog distemper typically incubates for about one to two weeks before symptoms become noticeable. During this period, the virus replicates within the dog's body, preparing to make its presence known.

Initial Symptoms

The early signs of distemper in dogs often mimic those of a common cold. You may notice your dog has a runny nose and eyes, along with a mild cough. These symptoms can be easily overlooked, but they are the first indicators that something is amiss. Your dog might also appear slightly lethargic and may have a reduced appetite.

Advanced Symptoms

As the disease progresses, more severe symptoms will start to manifest. This usually occurs within a few days of the initial signs. Your dog may experience a high fever, which can be accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea. The cough may worsen, and you might notice your dog having difficulty breathing. In addition, your pet may start to develop neurological issues, such as seizures, tremors, and difficulty walking.
