Rabies is a serious and often fatal disease that can affect dogs of any age, breed, or size. When it comes to puppies, the symptoms of rabies can be particularly concerning. Recognizing the signs of rabies in a young dog is crucial for the health and safety of both the animal and humans.

Visible Agitation and Aggressive Behavior

One of the earliest symptoms of rabies in puppies is a noticeable change in behavior. An affected puppy may become excessively agitated or restless. This can manifest as pacing back and forth, whining for no apparent reason, or showing signs of anxiety. Aggressive behavior might also occur, such as growling, snapping, or even attempting to bite without provocation.

Paralysis and Loss of Coordination

As the disease progresses, a puppy with rabies may start to exhibit neurological symptoms. These can include paralysis, which often begins in the throat and results in difficulty swallowing. You might notice the puppy gagging or coughing. Loss of coordination is another common symptom, leading to a wobbly gait or the inability to stand up properly.
