Rabies is a serious viral disease that affects the central nervous system of mammals, including dogs. When a dog contracts rabies, the symptoms can be quite alarming and it's crucial for pet owners to be aware of these signs. Recognizing the symptoms early can help prevent the spread of the disease to other animals and humans.

Initial Symptoms

In the early stages of rabies, a dog may exhibit changes in behavior. These can include restlessness, anxiety, and a general sense of discomfort. The dog might also show a lack of appetite and may start to isolate itself from its usual social interactions. These early signs can be subtle and are often mistaken for other illnesses or behavioral issues.

Progressive Symptoms

As the disease progresses, the symptoms become more pronounced. A dog with rabies may become increasingly aggressive, showing signs of irritability and unpredictability. It might snap at anything or anyone, including its owners. This aggression can be interspersed with periods of listlessness and confusion.

Paralysis

One of the most distinctive symptoms of rabies in dogs is paralysis. This often starts in the hind legs and can spread to other parts of the body. The paralysis can cause the dog to have difficulty walking or standing up. In some cases, the paralysis can affect the muscles that control the throat, leading to difficulty swallowing and excessive drooling.

Fatal Outcome

Once a dog starts showing symptoms of rabies, the disease is almost always fatal. There is no cure for rabies once symptoms appear. The progression of the disease can be rapid, and death typically occurs within a few days to a couple of weeks after symptoms begin.
