Canine nodular panniculitis symptoms manifestation

Dogs can suffer from a condition known as nodular panniculitis, also referred to as nodular fat necrosis or more simply, nodular panniculitis. This is an inflammatory disease that affects the fat beneath the skin, leading to the formation of nodules. Recognizing the symptoms of this condition is crucial for timely treatment and the well-being of your furry friend.

Visible Lesions

One of the most noticeable symptoms of nodular panniculitis is the presence of firm, raised nodules under the skin. These nodules can vary in size and are often found on the chest, abdomen, legs, or neck. They may appear suddenly and can be either single or multiple. The skin over these nodules might appear red or inflamed, and in some cases, the nodules may ulcerate or rupture, oozing a discharge.

Systemic Symptoms

While the nodules are a primary indicator, nodular panniculitis can also cause systemic symptoms. Affected dogs might show signs of fever, lethargy, and a general feeling of malaise. They may also experience a loss of appetite, which can lead to weight loss if the condition persists.

Skin Changes

In addition to nodules, dogs with nodular panniculitis may exhibit other skin changes. The skin around the nodules can become thickened or hyperpigmented. Some dogs may also experience hair loss in the affected areas, and the skin might appear scaly or crusty.
