Dogs are beloved companions, and their health is paramount. One common health issue that can affect our furry friends is gastrointestinal nematode infection, which is caused by various types of worms. Recognizing the symptoms is crucial for timely treatment and the well-being of your pet.

Weight Loss and Poor Appetite

One of the first signs of a gastrointestinal nematode infection is unexplained weight loss. Despite eating normally, or even increased food intake, dogs may lose weight rapidly. This is often accompanied by a poor appetite, as the worms compete with the dog for nutrients, leaving the pet feeling less inclined to eat.

Diarrhea and Vomiting

Diarrhea is another common symptom. The stool may contain mucus or blood, indicating the severity of the infection. Vomiting can also occur, sometimes with worms visible in the vomit, which is a clear sign of an infestation. These symptoms can lead to dehydration if not addressed promptly.

Abdominal Distension

An infected dog may have a distended or bloated abdomen. This is often caused by the physical presence of the worms in the gastrointestinal tract, which can lead to discomfort and a pot-bellied appearance.

Weakness and Lethargy

As the infection progresses, dogs may exhibit weakness and lethargy. They might be less interested in playing or going for walks, and may spend more time resting or lying down. This lack of energy is a direct result of the worms sapping their strength.

Coat Deterioration

The coat of an infected dog may become dull and lackluster. This is because the worms are stealing the nutrients that would otherwise be used to maintain a healthy coat. In severe cases, the fur may even start to fall out.

Paleness and Weak Pulse
