Dog roundworms, also known as Toxocara canis, are a common internal parasite that can affect dogs of all ages. The incubation period for these parasites can vary, but symptoms often start to appear four to six weeks after infection. Recognizing the signs and taking appropriate action is crucial for the health and well-being of your furry friend.

Subtle Signs of Infection

During the early stages of the incubation period, symptoms might be subtle or go unnoticed. These can include a slight cough, a decrease in appetite, and a general sense of lethargy. Some dogs may also experience mild diarrhea, which could be easily mistaken for an upset stomach.

Visible Symptoms

As the infection progresses, more visible symptoms start to manifest. One of the most common signs is a potbelly appearance, especially in puppies. This is due to the worms absorbing nutrients from the dog, leading to malnutrition and bloating. You might also notice that your dog is losing weight despite eating normally. Vomiting can occur, and in some cases, you may even see adult roundworms in the vomit or feces, which are white and can be several inches long.
