Rabies is a serious and potentially fatal disease that affects the central nervous system. It's caused by a virus transmitted through the saliva of infected animals, most commonly dogs. The symptoms of rabies in dogs can be quite alarming, and it's crucial to be aware of the early signs. The incubation period, or the time between exposure to the virus and the onset of symptoms, typically ranges from two to eight weeks but can vary widely.

Early Symptoms

During the early stages of rabies, a dog may exhibit changes in behavior that can be subtle or easily overlooked. One of the first signs is often a general sense of restlessness or anxiety. The dog might seem more irritable than usual or display a lack of appetite. As the virus progresses, the dog may start to show a preference for solitude, seeking out quiet places to hide.

Another early symptom is a change in the dog's eating habits. They might eat unusual things, like rocks or sticks, or they may exhibit a strange fascination with water, which is sometimes referred to as hydrophobia. This can be one of the more noticeable signs, as it's a significant departure from normal behavior.

Neurological Signs

As rabies advances, neurological signs become more apparent. The dog may have difficulty walking, appearing wobbly or uncoordinated. This is due to the virus affecting the brain and spinal cord. Seizures or muscle twitching can also occur, which can be distressing to witness.

Dogs with rabies may also experience changes in their bark or voice. They might bark more or less than usual, or their bark may sound different. This change is a result of the virus affecting the dog's ability to control its vocal cords.
