Understanding Horner's Syndrome in Dogs

Horner's syndrome is a condition that can affect dogs, causing a variety of symptoms that might puzzle pet owners. It's essential to recognize the signs and know what to do if your furry friend is showing symptoms of this condition.

Symptoms to Watch For

The symptoms of Horner's syndrome in dogs are distinctive. One of the most noticeable signs is drooping of the eyelids on one side of the face, known as ptosis. You might also observe that the affected eye appears smaller than the other. Another hallmark of the syndrome is a constricted pupil in the affected eye, which is called miosis. Additionally, the third eyelid, or nictitating membrane, may prolapse, giving the eye a red, inflamed appearance.

Other symptoms can include an elevated third eyelid, which can sometimes cover part of the eye, and an inability to fully close the affected eye. Some dogs may also experience a loss of pigment in the iris of the affected eye, although this symptom is less common.

Causes and Diagnosis

Horner's syndrome is caused by damage to the sympathetic nervous system, which controls various functions, including the dilation of the pupils and the elevation of the third eyelid. The damage can result from a variety of factors, such as trauma, tumor, infection, or even an ear infection that affects the nerves leading to the eye.

Diagnosing Horner's syndrome usually involves a thorough examination by a veterinarian. They may use a special eye drop that dilates the pupils to see if there is a difference between the two eyes. If one pupil dilates while the other does not, it could indicate Horner's syndrome.
