Understanding Why Dogs Rub Their Bums on the Ground
Section 1: Introduction to Anal Glands
Located on either side of the anus, slightly below the midpoint, anal glands are a type of gland that secretes a unique,刺激性 gas to mark territory. These glands are considered to be a partially undeveloped organ.
At the 48 o'clock position, there is an anal gland that opens outward. Visually, you may notice two small lumps, which are the anal glands. Inflammation of the anal glands can cause discomfort and swelling in dogs, along with an unpleasant odor. In mild cases, the inflammation can be treated at home, but in severe cases, veterinary intervention, such as debridement surgery, may be necessary.
Section 2: Why Clean Your Dog's Anal Glands?
The smell that comes from a dog's body primarily originates from the anal glands. Regularly assisting your dog in expressing their anal glands not only helps eliminate body odor but also prevents anal gland infections.
Section 3: Symptoms of Anal Gland Inflammation
When a dog's anal glands are problematic, they may exhibit unusual behaviors such as licking their anus, rubbing their buttocks on the ground, chasing their tails, or biting the base of their tail. This can lead to swelling and, in some cases, the dog may become disoriented or suffer from constipation.
Section 4: Frequency of Anal Gland Expression
To prevent anal gland inflammation, it is generally recommended to express the anal glands every 12 weeks. Since anal gland fluid does not typically discharge on its own, it requires the owner's effort to maintain the dog's health. If you accidentally injure your dog while expressing the glands and it results in inflammation, it's important to seek veterinary care promptly to reduce swelling and inflammation.
Section 5: Proper Cleaning Techniques for a Dog's Anal Region
Due to the varying muscle thickness in small and large dogs, the method of cleaning can differ. It is generally advised that large dogs' anal glands be expressed by a veterinarian or a professional groomer. Typically, a healthy dog's anal gland secretions are liquid, ranging in color from light yellow to brown, and have a distinct smell. If the glands have been blocked for an extended period, the secretions may appear darker brown and can usually be expressed with gentle pressure.
