Abnormal Water Intake

Cats, much like us, have a tendency to be picky about their water intake. This is why, as their guardians, we must be vigilant when they consume more water than usual.

It's not uncommon for cats to drink water three to four times a day, especially if they're fed canned food, which already contains some moisture. Even cats on a dry kibble diet typically don't drink excessively. The typical signs of a cat's water consumption are: low volume, infrequent drinking, and a quick departure from the water bowl.

Conversely, if you notice your cat drinking more water more frequently, and lingering by the water bowl for extended periods, especially if this behavior persists for over two days, it's time to take notice. Your feline friend might be suffering from diabetes or Cushing's syndrome.

Abnormal Eating Patterns

Just like humans, a cat that eats, drinks, defecates, and is active is generally in good health. This saying is indeed grounded in truth.

The early signs of illness in cats often include a decrease in appetite, sometimes leading to complete refusal to eat, and a poor mental state. Diarrhea and soft stools may also occur. Conversely, a sudden increase in appetite is also an abnormal sign.

Since cats often adapt their lifestyle to their owners', their eating and drinking habits tend to be relatively consistent, especially when their daily routine is stable.

A significant decrease in a cat's food intake at home could indicate issues with the digestive system or the liver and gallbladder. If a cat goes without eating for three consecutive days, there's a high likelihood of developing fatty liver. Similarly, if your cat's eating habits suddenly increase, it's a red flag that should not be ignored. This could be a sign of diabetes, Cushing's syndrome, hyperthyroidism, or adrenal gland hyperactivity, among other conditions.

Therefore, it's crucial for cat owners to have a clear understanding of their pet's typical eating and drinking habits. If any unusual patterns emerge, it's important to pay close attention and seek veterinary advice promptly.
