Risks of Insufficient Exercise for Dogs: What You Need
Many pet owners mistakenly believe that a small dog can simply run around the house, but this is actually incorrect. Even small breeds require exercise to stay healthy and content. They need to explore, sniff around, and take in their surroundings to prevent restlessness. Unless you have a spacious backyard for your dog to roam freely, it's essential for them to go outside to stretch their legs, breathe fresh air, and explore the world.
Insufficient exercise in dogs can lead to several issues:
1. Overweight Dogs
Obesity is a growing concern for dogs worldwide. Overeating and underexercising are the primary causes of this problem. A daily walk, playing fetch, or even a short jog can provide the necessary exercise for our pets. Exploring new places and enjoying the outdoors together can be incredibly rewarding. If your dog is overweight, increasing its physical activity is a costeffective way to combat obesity and a multitude of diseases, as long as you're willing to take that first step.
2. Destructive Behavior
Dogs that don't receive enough exercise often become anxious and restless, seeking ways to release their stress. This may manifest as tearing up paper towels, chewing on furniture, or destroying walls, among other things, including your socks and shoes. Without the opportunity to vent their energy, they may turn to destructive behavior as a means of relief.
3. Barking and Howling
Bored dogs may start barking and howling in an attempt to get your attention and alleviate their stress. With pentup energy and a lack of stimulation, they may resort to howling to express their discontent. Therefore, if your dog is suddenly barking without a reason, consider taking it for a run. Once it's had a chance to burn off some steam, it should return to a calm state.
