Do Cats Dream While Sleeping? A Fascinating Insight!
Just like humans, feline creatures also experience two distinct types of sleep: REM (Rapid Eye Movement, which signifies the onset of dreaming) and nonREM (deep sleep). Approximately 30% of a cat's sleep cycle is dedicated to REM sleep, during which their brainwave patterns closely resemble those of humans. In contrast, humans typically spend about 20% of their sleep time in the REM stage. During infancy, humans can even spend up to 80% of their sleep in REM sleep.
When a cat is in REM sleep, characterized by rapid eye movement, you might notice their limbs twitching occasionally, whiskers quivering, and even a faint, subtle movement of the eyelids, despite them being closed.
In nonREM sleep, also known as deep sleep, the cat's body enters a state of rejuvenation. It's during this time that bones and muscles begin to regenerate, and the immune system kicks into gear to ward off diseases. The only visible sign of movement is the cat's rhythmic, calm breathing as they rest comfortably.
As for what cats dream about during their REM sleep, we can only speculate on simple themes. Perhaps they're reliving the day's hunting escapades or dreaming of snatching the last piece of meat from your plate.
