Does a Teddy Bear Need Calcium? A Quick Guide
The issue at hand is that the dog food we feed our pets may not necessarily be the genuine "good dog food." If the quality of the food is subpar, it can lead to insufficient calcium, which in turn can cause developmental issues. While you can feel somewhat reassured if your Teddy Bear dog is on a premium diet, the reality is that most dogs are consuming mid to lowend dog food based on sales figures.
Signs of Calcium Deficiency in Teddy Bears:
Problems with bone development, such as joint malformation and abnormal leg shapes.
Reduced immunity, which can lead to severe issues in the nervous system. As adults, calcium deficiency can result in unsteady gait, sporadic twitching of limbs, depression, and decreased appetite.
dull and lackluster coat without the usual sheen.
Decreased activity levels in your Teddy Bear, often feeling lackluster and unwilling to walk or run.
Poor dental development, with retained puppy teeth and slow growth of adult teeth, which can lead to double rows of teeth.
How to Supplement Calcium for Teddy Bears:
1. During the puppy stage, when bones are developing, calcium is essential. You can start supplementing with calcium, either in liquid form or as tablets, after weaning. Small dogs typically reach adulthood around 10 months, developing earlier than larger breeds, which usually take about 12 months to mature.
2. As adult dogs have their skeletal structure fully developed, their calcium needs are minimal. It's crucial not to oversupplement calcium in adult dogs, as excessive calcium can be harmful.
3. During pregnancy and lactation, when the developing fetus and the milk for nursing require calcium, it's advisable to use liquid calcium supplements due to their quick absorption. Severe calcium deficiency in a pregnant or lactating dog can lead to seizures, and in extreme cases, even coma and death.
4. Dogs are considered senior at around 7 years of age. It's also important to supplement calcium during their senior years, but it's recommended to do so gradually with calcium tablets.
