Almost all Bulldogs possess an exaggerated skull structure, characterized by a short skull, a squaredoff head shape, an underbite, and a snout that points upwards. These features are what give Bulldogs their powerful bite and the unique ability to maintain a grip on their prey while still being able to breathe.

However, as with any trait, there are tradeoffs. This short skull and upwardfacing nose can lead to very short nasal passages, with the nose being positioned further back in the skull compared to other breeds. Snoring is just one of the many issues that can arise from this structure.

Most Bulldogs, including French Bulldogs, Pugs, English Bulldogs, Bull Terriers, Bolognese, and English Mastiffs, among others, regardless of their size or historical origin, can exhibit snoring. While this is not typically a cause for alarm, it doesn't mean you should ignore it.

How can you tell if snoring is normal?

Changes in a dog's condition, such as obesity, aging, and muscle relaxation, or increased snoring after medication, should raise your concern as these can be signs of underlying health issues.

Some dogs snore less when sleeping on their side, while others may snore less when lying flat. It's important to observe your dog's preferred sleep position to help manage their snoring.

Grass, soil, and other foreign objects can enter a dog's nose and cause blockages in the small, short nasal passages, exacerbating snoring.

Allergies

Some dogs may snore due to allergic reactions, which can cause the airways to swell and narrow. If left untreated, this can lead to respiratory deterioration and even disease over time.

So, how can you alleviate snoring?

Regular, moderate exercise can help dogs adjust their muscles, which can effectively reduce snoring. However, be cautious not to overexert them to prevent overheating, especially since Bulldogs are prone to this risk.

Keep humidity in check

Placing a humidifier near your dog's sleeping area can add extra moisture to the air, making it easier for them to breathe. This tip is particularly effective for breeds like the Bullmastiff, who are prone to snoring.

Keep the sleeping area clean

Ensure that your dog's bedding is free from dust, pollen, and other allergens. If you share a room with your dog, also be mindful of any allergens present in your own household items.
