Cat & Dog Allergies: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments
Today, I'd like to share with you one of the common ailments affecting both cats and dogs: allergies.
Allergies occur when the immune system of an individual, which has already been primed by exposure to a particular substance, responds again upon encountering that same substance. In medical terms, the substances that trigger allergic reactions are known as allergens. Given the vast number of species, each cat and dog is an individual, and a significant portion of allergies are inherited.
Common symptoms of allergies in pets include sneezing, persistent diarrhea, itchy skin, hair loss, and excessive chewing. In severe cases, allergic reactions can even be lifethreatening.
Let's delve into some of the most common allergens:
1. Inhalant Allergens – These are substances inhaled through the air, such as pollen, cottonwood fluff, dust, mites, paint fumes, various fragrances, and secondhand smoke.
2. Food Allergens – These are found in the diet and can include seafood, dairy products, legumes, poultry, beef and lamb, wheat, sesame oil, tangerines, pears, various fruits, nuts, vegetables, candied fruits, foreign proteins, alcohol, and more.
3. Contact or BiteInduced Allergens – These are substances that pets come into contact with or are bitten by, such as hair dyes, paint, shampoos, synthetic materials, plastics, collars, bacteria, mold, viruses, and parasites. Flea bites are particularly common in causing skin allergies.
4. Drug Allergens – These include medications like penicillin and other drugs, vaccines, and blood products.
5. SelfGenerated Allergens – These can be caused by emotional fluctuations, microbial infections, claw injuries, burns, and more.
Treatment for allergies in dogs and cats primarily involves avoiding the allergen. If you notice your pet showing signs of an allergic reaction, it's crucial to take them to a reputable veterinary clinic immediately. For severe or complex cases, it's advisable to conduct an allergen screening.
