What Does a Pug Eat?
It's generally recommended to feed your pug on a "seven out of ten" scale, ensuring they don't overeat. Implement a strategy of "less is more" with multiple small meals throughout the day. Pugs, when overfed, tend to run around and play excessively, which can lead to vomiting their food back up.
For puppies that are often confined to a cage, eating can be one of their rare forms of entertainment, so they may appear particularly hungry. However, if a dog always seems to be hungry, is inactive, and has poor digestion, it might be a sign of illness. It's best to consult a veterinarian in such cases.
When switching your dog's food, don't make the change all at once. Instead, mix half of the new food with the old, and after a few days, gradually increase the proportion of new food. This helps the dog's digestive system adjust, reducing the risk of diarrhea. Contrary to popular belief, bones can actually block a dog's intestines, causing constipation and leading to vomiting and decreased appetite. Chicken bones, in particular, are a nogo due to their small size and brittleness, which can easily block the esophagus or puncture the gastrointestinal tract.
Always provide plenty of fresh water alongside their meals. There's no need for distilled water or boiling water; their stomachs don't care for these.
Here's a rough guide for meal times: from weaning to three months old, feed three to four times a day; from three to six months old, two to three times; from six months to one year, twice; and around one year, twice. Meal times should align with rest periods, but also consider postmeal activities like walking the dog, urination, cleaning the litter box, and washing dishes.
Wash the dishes immediately after meals to prevent attracting pests like mice, cockroaches, or ants, and to avoid food spoilage due to sunlight or rain. Leave the bowls open to prevent your dog from getting bored and potentially chewing through them. As for the amount to feed, follow the guidelines on the packaging and adjust based on how much your dog eats.
