Effective Tips to Correct Your Dog's Food Guarding Beha
Why Do Dogs Guard Their Food?
Dogs' tendency to guard their food is actually an instinctual behavior, rooted in their primal instincts for survival. It's a protective mechanism to ensure their sustenance. This instinct is deeply embedded in their DNA. But how can we address this behavior in our furry friends? Here are some strategies you can try, dear pet parents:
1. Revamp the Feeding Method
It's crucial to make your dog understand that you are the provider of food, not a competitor. Show your dog that you are involved in preparing their meals, not taking them away. Make it clear that you are in control of the food supply.
When feeding, offer moderate portions to encourage your dog to seek you out for more when they're hungry. If you have multiple dogs, ensure each has their own bowl to prevent them from competing for food.
2. Feed in a Sequential Order
As pack animals, dogs often follow a hierarchy, with the alpha dog eating first. This genetic memory can manifest in your home, too.
Be mindful of this when feeding. Avoid giving your dog food before you eat, as this might make them feel like the alpha. Instead, serve your dog after you've finished your meal. Stay with them while they eat to prevent them from feeling isolated and suspicious of others.
3. Obedience Training
Engage in regular obedience training sessions with your dog, teaching commands like 'sit', 'shake', and 'down'. Reward them for following these commands to strengthen the bond and reinforce the idea that obedience leads to rewards, including food.
The golden period for training is between 2 to 6 months of age. If your dog is older, training might be more challenging and potentially riskier. In such cases, consider seeking professional guidance to ensure a safe and effective training process.
