Part 1: Signs of Estrus in Cats

Males: After a cat enters estrus, also known as heat, their reproductive organs may swell, and while they do not menstruate, a small amount of white discharge may be present. Many female cats become particularly affectionate during this time, often rubbing against their owners and rolling on the ground. They may also lift their tails in a mating posture. Some cats may also experience a decrease in appetite and constant yowling throughout the day and night.

Females: Male cats, too, will exhibit nonstop yowling during estrus, primarily to attract female cats. Their reproductive organs will also become engorged, and they may spray urine vertically onto objects. After estrus, male cats may become more territorial and aggressive, potentially even displaying aggressive behavior towards humans if they feel threatened.

Part 2: Caring for Cats During Estrus

1. Nutritional Support: Estrus can accelerate a cat's energy expenditure due to hormonal changes, so they require additional nutrition. If your cat shows a decrease in appetite, ensure they have access to their favorite foods to maintain a balanced diet and meet their nutritional needs.

2. Increase Interaction: Cats cannot control their instinctual estrus behaviors, so it's important to be understanding and accommodating. Spend more quality time with your cat, engage in play sessions with toys like cat wands, and this can help distract them from the discomfort of estrus.

3. Secure Doors and Windows: Cats in estrus may attempt to escape in search of a mate. To prevent them from wandering off, always keep doors and windows closed when you leave the house. For highrise dwellers, ensure that protective screens are in place to prevent falls and injuries.

Caution: Cats during estrus have weakened immunity, and female cats have open cervixes, so it's best not to bathe them. If they get dirty, gently wipe them with warm water instead.

Remember, if you're not planning to breed your cat, it's advisable to have them spayed or neutered as soon as possible. Early spaying can prevent various diseases and significantly extend your cat's lifespan.
