Choosing the Perfect Cat Food Bowl: Tips & Guide
While automatic feeders and water dispensers are available on the market, it is generally not advisable to use them, unless you are away on a long trip and they become a necessity. Automatic feeders can actually diminish the bond between you and your cat, and automatic water dispensers often have a large capacity, which means the water can become stale. Cats tend to prefer fresh water every day.
Ceramic Bowls
Ceramic bowls are the ideal choice for your cat's food and water bowls. They are resistant to high temperatures and corrosion, making them less conducive to bacterial growth. Additionally, they are heavier, which deters cats from knocking them over.
How to Choose a Ceramic Bowl?
Look for bowls with a larger diameter. The bigger the bowl, the heavier it is, which can provide added safety. Ensure that the opening of the bowl is wider than the width of an adult cat's whiskers to prevent discomfort during feeding.
The bowl should also have a stand beneath it to elevate it to a comfortable height for your cat. Larger stands are less likely to move and are therefore safer. There are two types of ceramic bowl stands: singlestand and doublestand designs.
Plastic Bowls
Plastic bowls are lightweight, easy to carry, and less prone to breaking, making them convenient for travel or temporary use.
However, there are drawbacks. They can harbor bacteria, tend to degrade over time, and the plastic material can leach into the food and water. While they are not entirely unsuitable, they are not ideal for longterm use. They are particularly handy for when you're out and about. There are also singlestand and doublestand options available.
Stainless Steel Bowls
Stainless steel bowls are easy to clean, resistant to bacterial growth, and do not rust. However, stainless steel is not entirely safe for food consumption. While it is less likely to rust than other materials, over time, the salt in food can react with the steel, potentially leaching chromium and nickel into the food. Nickel compounds can cause skin allergies in cats, and hexavalent chromium is highly toxic.
Types of Stainless Steel Bowls
Similar to the other types, stainless steel bowls come in singlestand and doublestand configurations, offering a durable and hygienic feeding solution for your feline friend.
