Section 1: Feeding Principles

When a dog lacks appetite, it is appropriate to let it fast for a day to help stimulate its hunger. Not all dogs are fed in the traditional manner; the frequency of feeding can vary depending on the breed and the method of care. For instance, Dachshunds often prefer dry kibble and can be fed up to four times a day, but portions should not be excessive. If switching to semimoist dog food, which is richer in nutrients, the amount fed daily should be reduced accordingly. The key principle is to avoid overfeeding your dog.

Section 2: Feeding Methods

For those who can afford it, purchasing commercial dog food from a feed mill is a convenient option. Complete and balanced commercial dog food can be fed directly, while concentrated and complete feed can be supplemented with additional grains and energyrich foods as directed. This method is both convenient and meets nutritional standards. However, commercial dog food is not yet widely available in China, and it can be quite expensive. Therefore, using leftovers from meals is often a more economical choice.

Section 3: Feeding Puppies

1. Puppies between two and three months old have underdeveloped digestive systems. Hard kibble should be soaked in warm water before feeding, and it should be given three times a day. Any remaining food should be discarded to prevent diarrhea. Never leave food on the ground for your dog to eat, as this can harm its teeth and expose it to bacteria and parasites. Avoid giving milk, as it can be harmful to their digestive systems.

It is crucial to fast the puppies once a week, feeding them cooked cabbage to aid in digestion and to help eliminate indigestible food. This also helps remove hairballs and cleanses the intestines, ensuring a healthy stomach for your puppy.

2. Encourage good dental hygiene from an early age by avoiding soft treats, which can hinder tooth growth and affect your dog's lifespan. Start feeding puppies solid dog food at around three to four months, giving them three meals a day, and gradually reduce to two meals a day. Ensure they have access to plenty of water. The food bowl should be placed at a comfortable height, neither too low nor too high.

3. Add cooked carrots and diced sweet potatoes to the puppy's food. Introduce small amounts of meat after four months, but avoid pork until five months. Do not add salt, as puppies do not require it at this stage.

4. If the puppy has been given calcium supplements, you can also add seaweed powder. If your dog has a tendency to lick the ground, consider adding iron and zinc supplements, as well as a multivitamin. Hairball supplements are not recommended. For optimal calcium intake, consider feeding yogurt cheese when conditions permit.
