Cats often have eye boogers, which is quite normal. Just like humans, their bodies produce some eye discharge as part of their natural metabolism. Sometimes, factors such as diet, endocrine issues, or foreign body irritation can lead to an increase in the amount of eye discharge.

However, if your cat is producing an excessive amount of eye discharge and the color is unusual, accompanied by symptoms like redness of the conjunctiva, excessive tearing, difficulty opening the eyes, and photophobia, it's a strong indication that your cat may be suffering from an eye inflammation, and it's crucial to seek medical treatment promptly.

1. Normal Eye Discharge in Cats

Cats typically have white or translucent eye discharge that dries to a brownish color. This type of discharge does not cause any irritation to the eyes and can be easily wiped away with a clean tissue.

2. Yellow Eye Discharge

If your cat has a lot of yellow eye discharge but no other symptoms, it's often a sign of heat or inflammation. Cats experiencing heat may also exhibit symptoms like dry nose tips, yellow urine, strong urine odor, dry or soft stools.

Causes of Heat in Cats:

Greasy or overly salty diet

Longterm consumption of dry food with insufficient water intake

Vitamin deficiency

Treatment Methods:

Gently clean the eye discharge with a cotton ball soaked in physiological saline.

Use Shan Jing (Jinyinhua Eye Wash) to soothe dry and hot eyes, and prevent infections.

Offer your cat wet food and encourage them to drink more water.

3. YellowGreen脓状 Eye Discharge

If your cat has yellowgreen, puslike eye discharge that is sticky and thick, along with symptoms like difficulty opening the eyes, red conjunctiva, pain, frequent blinking, and photophobia, it's likely that the cat has an eye infection, such as conjunctivitis, dacryoadenitis, or keratitis.

Treatment Methods:

Clean the pus from the eye with a cotton ball soaked in physiological saline to relieve discomfort.

Use Bailangming (Neomycin sulfate eye drops) to inhibit and eliminate bacterial infections.

Fit your cat with an Elizabethan collar to prevent them from scratching their eyes, which could lead to further injury or infection.

If there is no improvement after 3 to 5 days of home treatment, it's essential to seek veterinary care immediately.

4. Eye Discharge and Runny Nose

If your cat has symptoms like puslike eye discharge, squinting, photophobia, along with a runny nose, sneezing, loss of appetite, fever, and listlessness, it could indicate an infection with feline rhinotracheitis virus or feline calicivirus. It's best to consult a veterinarian promptly.

For cases where veterinary care is not immediately available, you can consider using feline rhinotracheitis and feline calicivirus test kits to confirm the infection.

For rhinotracheitis (herpesvirus) infection, antiviral eye drops containing ganciclovir can be used to treat eye inflammation. For calicivirus infection, tetracycline ointment can be applied to prevent secondary infections. Additionally, treat your cat's other symptoms with appropriate medications.
