Dog Scrotum Swelling and Peeling: What to Do?
Hello everyone, welcome to Oxygen Pet Doctor~
As dog owners well know, one of the canine's favorite activities is licking. They might lick their private parts, their faces, the behinds of other dogs, and even urine...
But there's one area they seem to particularly enjoy: their testicles!
However, if your dog continuously licks their testicles (scrotum), it could be a sign that their testicles are inflamed, possibly indicating the early stages of scrotal inflammation.
Canine Scrotal Inflammation
Causes of Scrotal Inflammation:
Moist and humid environments, often lying on damp or unclean floors, leading to friction.
Urine and hair around the scrotum can lead to bacterial infections.
Discomfort due to hormonal changes during heat or estrus can cause dogs to excessively lick their scrotum, fostering bacterial growth.
Bites from insects can cause allergies and itching, prompting the dog to lick the area more, leading to scrotal inflammation.
Unnoticed cuts can lead to inflammation if the dog licks the area frequently.
Symptoms of Scrotal Inflammation:
The scrotum may exhibit symptoms such as itching, redness, peeling, blisters, scabs, discharge, thickening, papules, red spots, and even pus.
Treatment for Scrotal Inflammation:
First, clean the testicles and surrounding fur with iodine solution.
Then, apply a medicated ointment such as Fusant (zinc oxide ointment), erythromycin ointment, or Bactroban, twice or thrice a day.
Severe cases may require oral antibiotics like Esudan (cefadroxil tablets) or amoxicillin clavulanate, taken twice daily.
Use a head collar and a "shorts" to prevent further licking and environmental bacterial infections.
To prevent recurrent scrotal inflammation, it is recommended that intact dogs be neutered in a timely manner.
Maintain a clean and dry living environment for your dog.
Scrotal inflammation is a metabolic disease often caused by vitamin deficiencies. Daily supplementation with 普安特 Composite Vitamin Tablets is advisable.
Typically, recovery can be expected within 710 days.
